The Cooper Tire Recall

One of life's truisms among drivers is ignoring one of the most important components of a car or truck, namely it's tires. We only think about our truck or car tires when something goes wrong or we obviously need a tire replacement. We want to avoid having to spend the time it takes to sit in a dreary tire dealer waiting room while they take their time getting to our vehicle. We'd much prefer to be doing something else.

On the other hand, paying attention to our tires can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. Tire safety is continually being improved by tire manufacturers, but we have to cooperate by maintaining them properly.

Among other things, this can involve keeping abreast of tire recalls. Recently, Cooper tires has recalled nearly 92,000 tires for possible tread separation problems which could lead to crashes. This follows an investigation initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There also is some indication that the Cooper tire recall will be expanded.

At least two fatal accidents involving tread separation with Cooper tires have been alleged to have occurred. The particular brand of Cooper tire now being recalled are the Dominator Sport A/T made between July 2002 and March of 2005. The recalled tires have a DOT number starting with U9, 3D, UT, and UP.

Cooper denies any shortcomings in it's tires, but will replace the recalled models. More information can be obtained at the Department of Transportation (DOT) website.

Selecting the right tires for your vehicle is obviously crucial.
